Novo Nordisk and Anthropic announced a collaboration on Sep 16 to use Claude models and Claude Science on drug discovery and development, according to Novo’s company release. Novo will also use Anthropic frontier models for agentic software engineering inside the company.
What ships first: Novo will test Claude Science on specific R&D workflows and jointly tackle discovery problems Novo’s scientists and computational teams identify, including tools for biological reasoning. The release says the collaboration includes data governance and human oversight under Novo’s compliance standards.
Money gap: The company primary discloses no fee, equity stake, exclusivity term, or contract value. Read it as a named enterprise AI/R&D partnership, not a priced deal.
Novo CEO Mike Doustdar framed the tie-up as part of becoming “the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company,” saying AI can raise R&D productivity and “compress the path from research to marketed product.” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said giving researchers “safe, capable, and trusted frontier models” can shorten research timelines — company rhetoric, not a measured outcome.
Stake: Novo’s R&D and software stack; Anthropic’s enterprise/pharma footprint ahead of any IPO calendar; rival drugmakers buying lab AI; model vendors competing for regulated R&D buyers.
What’s next: Any later disclosure of commercial terms; first named Claude Science workflows in production; whether Novo expands beyond the initial test scope.
