OpenAI and Google Cloud are partnering to bring OpenAI’s frontier models and Codex agentic workflows into Google Cloud’s Model Garden, OpenAI said Wednesday. Google said OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna models are rolling out now in private preview to select enterprise customers, with more coming soon.

General availability is planned in the coming weeks, according to OpenAI, which said Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.

Why it matters

Google Cloud customers will be able to buy OpenAI’s frontier models through Model Garden, transacted through the Google Cloud Marketplace, and enterprises with Google Cloud spend commitments will be able to draw down those commitments for the purchases, OpenAI said. Google said usage will appear on a single Google Cloud invoice and count toward its Flexible Savings Plans.

Google said it is now “the only hyperscale cloud provider offering access to all three leading closed source LLMs,” alongside more than 200 first-party, third-party and open models.

Who has a stake

“This partnership is an important step in making our most capable models and Codex available where customers are already building,” Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, said in OpenAI’s announcement.

Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud’s CEO, said in OpenAI’s announcement that the company is “focused on giving customers a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI, so they can choose the right model for any given job.”

Box is among the companies planning to use the models. “By using OpenAI models through Google Cloud, we will be able to give customers access to OpenAI’s frontier AI models alongside Google Cloud’s security and compliance capabilities,” Yashodha Bhavnani, Box’s vice president of AI products, said in Google’s post.

What’s next

OpenAI said its models will soon be available in Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent; Google said they are coming soon to its Gemini for business and Antigravity. Starting Wednesday, customers can build with the models through Google’s APIs and connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to its Gemini platform for inference, Google said.
