King Charles convened leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, and Google DeepMind at Dumfries House in East Ayrshire on Sept. 17 for an AI summit facilitated by the Ditchley Foundation, with UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan attending (royal.uk). In his speech, the King said AI’s pace is “intriguing and deeply concerning in equal measure,” that creators are “increasingly warning that AI risks developing darker capacities — perhaps even to take life,” and that there is “urgency in adequately considering the existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands”: “Surely, we need sufficient means of control before it is all too late?” He asked how to harness benefits “with safety at its heart” and how to build “international cooperation and consensus” so “no Nation is left behind — but the human race is left in place,” and said decisions now “will shape the world inherited by future generations” (royal.uk speech text). Delegates considered a shared set of principles; no public binding commitments were announced (royal.uk / BBC).
