Amodei set for first one-on-one Trump dinner, reports say
Axios and CNBC reported the plan, which Trump confirmed Sunday; as of early Monday, neither the White House nor Anthropic had said it happened.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was scheduled to have a private dinner with President Donald Trump at the White House on Sunday night, Axios reported, in what Axios and CNBC, citing people familiar with the plan, said would be the first one-on-one meeting between Trump and the head of the company that makes the Claude AI models. Trump confirmed the plan to reporters on Sunday. As of early Monday, no one had said on the record that the dinner took place or what was discussed.
The dinner was set for two days after a divided federal appeals court ruled that the Pentagon can keep Claude out of its systems and its contractors’ work for the military. Axios called the dinner “an indication of thawing relations” between Anthropic and the administration. That is Axios’s reading; no policy change has been announced.
What was reported
Trump “plans to host” Amodei at a private White House dinner on Sunday evening, sources familiar told Axios. Amodei missed Thursday’s White House state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping because of a scheduling conflict, and afterward Trump “personally invited” him, one of the sources told Axios.
CNBC said Sunday afternoon that it had confirmed the dinner. A source familiar with the details told CNBC it would be the pair’s first one-on-one meeting.
What Trump said
Trump confirmed the plan himself. After returning to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday, he told reporters he was having a late dinner with Amodei, AP reported. “And tonight, I’m having dinner with the head of Anthropic, so these are long days, but I seem to be able to handle it,” Trump said on the tarmac, according to Euronews.
Asked by Fox News about Amodei’s call to slow AI development, Trump said: “We’re going to talk about it. I’m for let’s go and let’s win,” according to Fox Business.
A White House official gave the same statement to Axios and CNBC: “President Trump has been clear: America will lead the world in Super Intelligence, while protecting American consumers.” The statement does not describe the dinner. As of about 5:45 a.m. CT Monday, the White House had posted no readout on its website, and the official White House and Trump accounts on X had posted nothing about it. Anthropic had posted no statement on its newsroom or on X.
Why it matters
The two sides have fought for months over the limits Anthropic puts on how Claude can be used. According to Friday’s appeals court opinion, the Pentagon acted after Anthropic refused to relax contractual limits on the use of Claude for lethal autonomous warfare or domestic surveillance. The court upheld the Pentagon’s move 2-1.
Earlier this month, Amodei publicly urged the AI industry to slow the pace of advanced model development, and Trump attacked him in a post on Truth Social, CNBC reported. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Axios in an interview published Sept. 2 that Anthropic is “back on the right side” with the administration. “They’ve done what we asked,” Lutnick said.
The business stakes are large. Last week Akamai disclosed an $11.6 billion, seven-year cloud commitment from Anthropic, and in June Anthropic said it had confidentially submitted a draft registration to the SEC for a possible IPO.
A dinner is not a regulation, a contract or a settlement, and nothing on the record says any was reached.
What’s next
- Whether the White House or Anthropic confirms the dinner took place and says what was discussed.
- Tuesday’s White House meeting of Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and top AI CEOs, which both Axios and Trump in his Fox interview mentioned, and whether Amodei attends.
- Whether Anthropic seeks rehearing of Friday’s ruling or asks the Supreme Court to review it.
- Any change to the Pentagon’s supply-chain-risk designation. None has been announced.
