OpenAI tests Sponsored Agents that open from ChatGPT ads
The test is limited to select U.S. advertisers, and HubSpot and Shopify are first partners for its new ad tools, OpenAI says.

OpenAI said today it is testing Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT — labeled, business-sponsored conversational agents users can start after clicking an ad — and rolled new AI tools into its ads stack with first CRM and ecommerce partners.
What shipped: Sponsored Agents are in test with select U.S. advertisers. After an ad, a user can choose a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, ask follow-ups, and exit to the business site. OpenAI says that chat is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original user thread. Advertisers can create, update, and analyze campaigns in ChatGPT via an Ads Manager plugin; Ads Manager also suggests copy and imagery from a landing page/objective, with optional AI text customization and translation. HubSpot is the first CRM partner (create/track/follow up in HubSpot). Shopify is the first ecommerce partner: a U.S. ChatGPT Ads app is live; international markets where ChatGPT Ads run start Sep 23. Sign-up: ads.openai.com.
What it cannot do: This is not a general public launch of Sponsored Agents — select U.S. advertisers only. It does not turn every ChatGPT answer into an ad. OpenAI’s post does not publish pricing, fill rates, or independent disclosure audits.
Who it is for: U.S. ChatGPT users who see ads; advertisers already on ChatGPT Ads; HubSpot-connected businesses; U.S. Shopify merchants (international soon).
Risk: A labeled sponsored agent after an ad is still an ad product sitting next to an assistant people treat as neutral. The disclosure line — sponsored agent vs independent ChatGPT — is the product’s trust hinge; OpenAI’s claim that the sessions are separate does not settle how clear that is in the UI.
What’s next: Expansion past select U.S. advertisers; Shopify international on Sep 23; any regulator or researcher fight over labeled sponsored agents vs organic answers.
